(1) Identity documents
- Applicants with household registration in Taiwan should bring their citizen identity card, personal chop (or signature), household register, on half-length color photo taken within the past two years (for renewing the citizen identity card). For applicants applying for marriage registration through a third party after getting married overseas, they should provide a power of attorney authenticated by an overseas office of Taiwan or the organization or civilian organization established or appointed in Hong Kong and Macau by the Executive Yuan for the agent (i.e. the agent specified in the power of attorney), the agent should also bring his/her citizen identity card and personal chop (or signature).
- For applicants who had or never had household registration in Taiwan, household registration offices should examine their passports or the residence document legally issued to them by the National Immigration Agency of the Ministry of the Interior.
(2) Marriage documents
- Applicants getting married in Taiwan should bring their application for marriage. Although there is no specific format for the application for marriage, the following information should be indicated in the application: the name of the bride and the groom; date of birth of the bride and the groom, the citizen identity card number (passport number/ARC number) of the bride and the groom, and household registration address (overseas address) of the bride and the groom; and the signature or chop, the citizen identity card number (passport number/ARC number) of the bride and the groom, and household registration address (overseas address) of at least two witnesses.
- Applicants whose marriage has been effective overseas should bring the marriage document authenticated by the organization or civilian organization established or appointed in Hong Kong and Macau by the Executive Yuan or the marriage registration documents issued by the local government and a Chinese translation indicating, “Complying with the local law”. In this case, the marital status document is not required.
- If one of the couple is a foreigner, he/she should bring a statement of using Chinese name for the foreign spouse and a marital status document and its Chinese translation authenticated by an overseas office of Taiwan.
- The Chinese translation of a foreign marriage certificate made overseas should be authenticated by an overseas office of Taiwan or a notary public in Taiwan.
- Applicants applying for marriage registration with a citizen of mainland China should bring their marriage documents and the Exit & Entry Permit for the Taiwan Area containing the “interview passed and approved for marriage registration” stamp affixed by the National Immigration Agency of the Ministry of the Interior. Documents made in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau should be authenticated by the organization or civilian organization established or appointed in Hong Kong and Macau by the Executive Yuan. The validity of the marital status certificate of Chinese spouse should be within six month from the date of issue of the authentication certificate issued by the notary public of mainland China.
- Citizens without household registration in Taiwan or stateless people approved to reside in Taiwan by National Immigration Agency of the Ministry of the Interior who cannot provide a marital status certificate should bring a written document from two closest relatives to prove his/her single status. Documents made overseas should be authenticated by a foreign office of Taiwan.
(3) Underage applicants should bring the written consent of their legal representatives.
